Natural Energy Boosting Drink For Summer

Following on from Patrick Holford’s article earlier this week on boosting energy, here is a simple and refreshing way to recharge your batteries naturally and deliciously and keep cool!

With the, for the moment, hot weather of summer we need to stay hydrated as that is a huge energy drain and dehydration can allow chronic disease to build. It is natural to turn to caffeinated drinks and sugar filled fizzy offerings but your body will thank you if you offer it this amazing lemonade instead.

Proper hydration naturally boosts energy, detoxifies the body and supports greater mental and physical performance. This drink makes water more appealing by adding in natural sweetening agents and powerful essential oils with incredible health benefits. In particular, citrus essential oils and fresh citrus (lemons/limes) provide a mega-dose of vitamin C and vitamin P (citrus bioflavonoids) that enhance blood flow into deep regions of the body, preventing oxidative stress and helping you get toxic debris out of your system.

Not only does it taste good, but it is rich in anti-oxidants that will boost your energy and supercharge your cells so here is the recipe:

Why Hydration Matters at Menopause

Staying properly hydrated becomes even more important during menopause. Fluctuating hormones — particularly declining oestrogen — can affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature and retain moisture. This is one reason why hot flushes and night sweats can leave you feeling so drained. If you are not replacing those lost fluids, fatigue, headaches, and poor concentration can quickly follow.

Many women reach for tea, coffee, or sugary drinks when energy dips, but these can actually worsen dehydration and trigger hot flushes. A natural, refreshing alternative like this vitamin water gives your body what it truly needs.

Variations to Try

Once you have the basic recipe, you can experiment with different combinations:

  • Cucumber and lime: wonderfully cooling and gentle on the stomach
  • Ginger and lemon: add a few slices of fresh ginger for an anti-inflammatory boost
  • Berry infusion: muddle a handful of fresh raspberries or strawberries for natural sweetness and extra antioxidants
  • Herbal additions: try basil or rosemary leaves for a different flavour and additional health benefits

Benefits of the Key Ingredients

Each ingredient in this recipe has its own health benefits. Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which supports immune function and collagen production — both important as we age. Mint has traditionally been used to aid digestion and ease nausea. Stevia provides sweetness without spiking blood sugar, which is particularly helpful at menopause when insulin sensitivity may change.

Try to aim for at least six to eight glasses of fluid a day, and more in warm weather or if you are experiencing heavy night sweats. Making your water more appealing with natural flavourings like these is a simple but effective way to keep your hydration levels where they need to be.
